Compelling and Dynamic ADA-Compliant e-Learning

ADA/Section 508 compliance and accessibility are increasingly important concerns for businesses and government agencies alike. However, e-Learning that is built to be Section 508 compliant is perceived to be expensive, complicated and boring. But, this needn't be the case.

At an e-Learning Guild Conference held in San Francisco, Design Media presented a case study that highlights accessibility compliance using state-of-the art technology. The project for the State Capitol Museum of California has been lauded for its creativity and has been used as a showcase for how multimedia can be ADA compliant.

The presentation explored best practices for creating ADA compliant materials that are effective, compelling and do not break the development bank. The presentation covered the technical scope and demographic reach of the project [two platforms (Web and CD-ROM), two languages, virtual reality and other multimedia elements].

The presentation was geared to designers (instructional, visual and technical) who are interested in, or must address, ADA (Section 508) compliance in their materials.

We have made the presentation materials available here. There are three documents:

  • Eliminating Barriers (412K), a case history about developing a Section 508 compliant product suite
  • Compliance Tips and References (152K), a list of do's and don'ts, tips and resources for developing compliant online materials
  • Website Accessibility (2MB) download a zipped version of the presentation, or view the the html version. This presentation is a helpful look at the legal aspects of compliance and specific disabilities and how to address them
